Downtown Square
Walkable cluster of bars, restaurants, murals, and student energy.
San Marcos is best if you want an easy Central Texas weekend built around the river, downtown bars, and a younger crowd. For a Black traveler, it reads more as a relaxed tubing-and-food trip than a culture-heavy destination, but it is friendly, affordable, and well placed between Austin and San Antonio.
San Marcos is generally easy for visitors, especially around the square, Texas State, and river recreation zones in daytime. During busy weekends and tubing season, stay alert around crowded parks and parking areas, and rely on rideshare rather than wandering far late at night.
