Downtown Ithaca
Walkable core with restaurants, shops and the Commons.
Ithaca feels progressive, bookish and outdoorsy, with enough Black history and small-business energy to make a short trip meaningful. From a Black traveler perspective, it is more low-key than hype, but the Southside story, Cornell influence and lake-country setting give it depth.
Generally comfortable for visitors, especially around downtown, Cornell and Collegetown, but it is still a small upstate city where quiet streets can feel isolated late at night. For Black travelers, the bigger concern is occasional microaggressions in less diverse spaces rather than overt hostility; rideshare or driving is smart after dark outside the core.
