Every destination is scored 1–5 on four dimensions by the ROAM BLK editorial team, using traveler reports and reviews submitted inside the app, community discussion, and on-the-ground research. The overall score blends the four; written notes explain the number so you can disagree with it. Nothing here is paid for, and no tourism board reviews a score before it goes live.

How is the ROAM BLK safety score calculated?
Each destination gets an overall score from 1 to 5 built from four sub-scores rated 1–5: community welcome (how warmly Black travelers are received), police climate, discrimination risk (5 = low risk) and Black-owned business presence. Scores are set by the ROAM BLK editorial team from traveler reports, community reviews inside the app and on-the-ground research, then reviewed as new reports come in.
Who is behind the index?
ROAM BLK, the first travel app built for Black travelers. The index is not sponsored by any tourism board, hotel or airline. 283 destinations across 78 countries are rated as of 2026-09-05.
What does a score of 4.5 or higher mean?
4.5–5.0 is Excellent: Black travelers consistently report feeling welcome, with low discrimination risk and a visible Black community or Black-owned business scene. 3.5–4.4 is Good to Very good. 3.0–3.4 is Mixed. Below 3.0 means travelers report enough friction that we recommend planning around it.
